KAITLYN’S SPORTS STORIES RECAP: August 7, 2024
In this edition, we learn more about the Canadian women athletes who are part of Team Canada and their progress so far during the Paris Summer Games. Learn more specifically about the performances of Canadian teams in women’s soccer, women’s rugby, women’s rowing, women’s beach volleyball, and women’s 3×3 basketball and athletes like swimmer Summer McIntosh and hammer throw athlete Camryn Rogers.
Team Canada has currently won 17 medals, with 11 medals being won by women (one of which is a tennis mixed doubles medal). From those 11 medals, our Canadian women athletes have received four gold medals, three silver medals, and four bronze medals.
The stories of the week show young girls in sport and physical activity that:
- Whether it’s various obstacles or setbacks in place, for example, for the women’s soccer team or 3×3 basketball team, both teams have proved how powerful determination and focus can be on their success.
- The wins and recognition of the women’s rowing and rugby teams will help accelerate the growth of those sports for girls and women in Canada.
- The young talent of Team Canada athletes, such as Summer McIntosh and Camryn Rogers, shows that they likely still have some of their best career years ahead of them, and it’s still only the beginning for them.
Women’s Soccer Team’s Inspiring Run Ends in Quarter-Final Game Against Germany
If there were words to summarize the Canadian women’s soccer team’s run in the 2024 Paris Olympics, they would be strength, perseverance, and focus.
Immediately into their Olympic run, the players faced setbacks, including coaching changes, point deductions, and more. Despite less-than-ideal circumstances, the team rallied together and proved their previous Tokyo Olympic gold-winning talents in three straight wins, including a 2-1 win over New Zealand, a 2-1 win over France, and a 1-0 win over Colombia.
In the quarter-final match, the team’s Olympic run came to a sad but inspiring end with a 2-4 penalty shoot-out loss against Germany.
Women’s Rowing 8 Team Captures Second Consecutive Olympic Medal
Canada is a women’s rowing country. The Canadian women’s rowing 8 team won a silver medal in the finals. This comes after a gold medal win result at their last games, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The win marks the team receiving two consecutive Olympic medals after not previously winning an Olympic medal since the London 2012 Olympics.
Women’s Rugby Delivers Best-Ever Olympic Performance With Silver Medal Win
Rugby has gained popularity and attention among women’s sports worldwide during the Olympics thus far. There should hopefully be a positive trajectory for women’s rugby as a result of these Olympic games. The same is said for the state of women’s rugby in Canada.
In the finals, the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team received a silver medal for their second-place finish. This result marked Canada’s best-ever Olympic performance in rugby sevens. The team started the 2024 year off in ninth place and has proven obvious growth.
The team’s players reflected on the future of women’s rugby in Canada, stating, “I hope we’ve inspired some young girls in Canada to join rugby and grow the game.”
Summer McIntosh is First Canadian to Win 3 Olympic Golds at a Single Olympic Game
As people are coining it, it’s “Summer’s summer,” indeed. 17-year-old Canadian swimmer, Summer McIntosh has no doubt made a splash in only her second Olympic games, this time winning four medals.
She won three gold medals: one in the women’s 200-metre individual medley, the women’s 200-metre butterfly, and the women’s 400-metre individual medley, and one silver medal in the women’s 400-metre freestyle.
This accomplishment by McIntosh also made for a new Canadian sports history moment, making her the first Canadian to win three gold medals at a single Olympic game.
Women’s Beach Volleyball Team Finishes Dramatic Game with Win Over USA
The Canadian women’s beach volleyball’s exciting Olympics momentum continues and elevates after their statement win against the US women’s team.
In the elimination match, the Canadian team consisting of Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson won two straight sets, 21-19 in the first set and 21-18 in the second set.
The team moves forward in the quarter-finals with a matchup against Spain, hoping to make it to the semifinals with a quarter-finals win.
Women’s 3×3 basketball team shows bright future with fourth place standing in first Olympic appearance
In their 3×3 basketball debut, the Canadian women’s basketball team proved many positives for the future with their fourth-place finish, just shy of winning a bronze medal. Before the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Canadian women’s team held a first-place ranking for 3×3 women’s basketball.
In their bronze medal match, the Canadian team fell short after a 13-16 loss to the USA team.
It’s not to be overlooked that this first-time Canadian women’s 3×3 basketball team began their history-making moment of what it is today back in 2019. Back then, the team had no funding and essentially built from the ground up to where they are now.
Camryn Rogers looks to add Olympic medal to Team Canada in hammer throw final
Canadian hammer throw athlete Camryn Rogers, the current world champion and top-ranked thrower in the world, is looking to make Canadian history ahead of the upcoming throw final.
If she wins a medal in the finals, she will make history by becoming the first Canadian to win an Olympic medal in the women’s hammer throw.
